KUMAR ARUNACHALAM

me2.jpg

Just an also ran who tries to run harder. Chasing that ethereal end of a rainbow. Searching for that elusive terminal. So much to learn, so little time to spare - so much to talk, so few to talk to. A traveller meandering through the aisles of space and time, hoping: Hoping that somewhere along that narrow corridor I hope to bump into people I can vibe with....
I work for a medical institute having been in the profession for over 25 years and am a resident in a small city, Mangalore situated on the west coast of south India. The Arabian Sea shores the western edge of the city and due east in the distance one can see the rugged blue peaks the western ghat ranges.
My house is around 20 kilometers off the town, south, close to the Kerala State border. I live amidst dense unspoilt greenery - on a hill slope adjacent to my work place. Home is maintained by Lakshmi, a faithful maid who is here for ten years now, and her husband Ravi, who also doubles as my Man Friday. Also at home are four dogs, who yell, leap, howl and add din to the quiet habitat.

From the web (mangalorean.com)

Prof. Arunachalam Kumar, Vice Dean of the K S Hegde Medical Academy of the city, has been appointed as a reviewer for the prestigious high – impact factor internationally indexed British medical Journal (BMJ). The professor is the first non-clinician to be invited to review clinical research papers and contributions to the general medicine specialty journal.

The BMJ has published over a dozen communications from the professor in the last twelve months.

Dr. Kumar is already familiar to our readers through his articles which have been published on this site.  In fact Mangalorean.com has already published a brief write up on him earlier.

When Team Mangalorean asked Dr Kumar how does he feel after being appointed as a reviewer for BMJ, he says:

"The BMJ , along with The Lancet are two of the best known journals in the medical world. For me personally and professionally, the publication of my papers in both, marks a milestone that has been attained after a very tough and arduous effort. The BMJ has extraordinarily high editorial standards along a phenomenal rejection rate. To see my contributions appear regularly in the BMJ and according to viewer statistics find that some of my write-ups have found high readership has are like icing on the cake.

When last week the editors contacted me with an invitation to review and referee for them, it was doubly satisfying - first, because it was a welcome culmination to my journey in the scientific research world, and secondly, to realize that I possibly am the first and only non - clinical Indian to be given such honor"

Known as the most "versatile researcher in the country" according to the Limca book of Indian Records, Dr. Kumar is undoubtedly a man of great intellect.  A Dr. T M A Pai Gold Medal winner for Medical Research, he is also a "Polymath, master of six languages" namely Tamil, Kannada, Tulu, Telugu, Hindi and English.

An extract from an earlier article from our archives sums up his achievements in short  – "The sheer range of subjects, topics and themes touched on in Dr. Kumar’s articles are astounding: natural history, philosophy, current affairs, romance, personal anecdotes, fiction, science, politics, religion, sports, the works. The write –ups evoke a wide range of emotions in readers - elation, pathos, or rage – more than 2000 on site comments being testimony to his wordsmithy, having been logged in by site readers.  Often writing under the pen name ‘ixedoc', most of his pieces are contributed to natural history sites, besides appearing regularly on Sulekha, an off-shore site catering to the Indian diaspora.

Author of more than 150 articles in newspapers and magazines in India and abroad: just recently, the Invisible Man Press has released a book of his – his fifth, These include one on how to crack cryptic crossword puzzles, and another on the avifauna of his city. How does he find time for his prodigious output, even though he heads one of the busy departments with heavy workload in his college? His reply, "I write for two hours a day, at night or in the early hours of the day". His answer, though, covers only his internet diversions.  Professionally, he is better known as the man who publishes research papers, which today total one hundred and thirty, many winning awards and laurels at national or international conferences.

In 2005 alone, he has seventeen publications, most in indexed international journals, besides sixteen research presentations. Here again, the range of his scientific mind is so all encompassing that, the Limca Book of Indian Records, 1993-94, lists him as "one with the widest range of science papers in India" An award - winning teacher, with citations from Rotary, Jaycees, Air India and the State Government. Prof. Kumar has also qualified as a referee for the Amateur Body Builders Federation of India and a registered umpire for cricket. This latest recognition from the British Medical Journal is another well deserved feather in a cap that is already crowded with many such recognitions.

ArunachalamKumar.jpgLuxuriant Flowing Hair Club for Scientists

I have long flowing mane that has been consistently a subject     for ridicule and notoriety over the decades. I have even lost a term or two at my medical school in the seventies for sporting  shoulder length hair. Today, at 57, I am a professor at a medical college, my hair, though now less dense due to senility and senescence is still  long enough to draw attention and continues to remain topic of discussion and amusement for my colleagues and students

SOLUTION? The Black Toe developed by the two doctors.

MANGALORE: A solution to the most vexing problem of cricket umpiring has come from couple of doctors in Mangalore. Dr. Arunachalam Kumar and his associate Dr. M.B. Abhishek of Mangalore say they have found a simple remedy to ward off controversies over run-out decisions. Dr. Kumar says that one of the most disputed and debated areas in international cricket has been the decisions taken by third umpire on run-outs. The state-of-the-art camera and instant replays were not fully able to deliver dispute-free run-out decisions despite the third umpire reviewing over and over if the batsman was in or out. A few common doubts that come to the minds of third umpires are: `Has the batsman grounded the bat? `Was his bat on the crease? Or was it over the crease, but in air? Many third umpires in the past have given wrong decisions. It is human to err but when the error sends a batsman like Sachin Tendulkar or Brian Lara back to the pavilion, it hurts. Dr. Kumar and Dr. Abhishek have come up with a minor alteration to the toe of the bat. They call it "Black Toe". They have wound the toe of the bat with black tape which will enable the third umpire to see clearly in slow motion if the bat has crossed the crease in time or not. The black toe of the bat contrasts with white crease and gives the umpire the perfect position of bat, they claim.
